The Texas Smoke is Austin Bound with Tyson Leading the Way

Big news: Austin, Texas wants all the smoke in 2023!

Cincinnati Reds legend Brandon Phillips and professional wrestling champion Jade Cargill, owners of WPF’s fourth franchise, have officially announced the total brand rollout for the Texas Smoke. Along with the team’s name and logo drop, the Smoke announced that the team will lay their roots in Austin, Texas, bringing the city their second professional sports team.

The Texas Smoke logo pays homage to Angelina Eberly, an Austin citizen who was vigilant in preserving Austin as the state’s capital back in 1842. Eberly fired a cannon when she noticed the theft of the Republic of Texas’ public archives, and with the help of local authority, Austin’s status as the capital of Texas was saved. The Texas Smoke symbolizes a new group of women defending the city of Austin, only this time – they will be wearing the Smoke uniform.

Tori Tyson, head coach at Howard University, has been named Head Coach of the Smoke for the 2023 season. She is now in her fifth season at Howard, and led the Bison to a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship in 2022. Tyson looks to continue her impact on the game of softball, including becoming the first head coach of a professional softball team coming from a historically black college and university.

With the addition of Tyson, there are now three (of four) female head coaches in the WPF.
